Spain Bans Muslim Religious Gatherings in Jumilla
In June 2025, the far-right Vox party proposed banning Muslim religious celebrations from public sports facilities in Jumilla, a town of 27,000 in Spain's Murcia region home to approximately 1,500 Muslims. After anti-migrant riots swept nearby Torre-Pacheco in July, the Jumilla city council approved the motion on July 28 — the first ban of its kind in Spain. The Spanish government called it 'shameful' and ordered it revoked; the UN Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia expressed shock; Spain's Catholic bishops denounced it; and CAIR called it unconstitutional. While a Murcia court declined to temporarily suspend the motion in November 2025, ruling it was only a political instruction, the constitutional challenge remains pending and Vox has threatened to block Jumilla's budget until the ban is formally implemented.
India 'I Love Muhammad' Mass Prosecutions
India has increasingly criminalized Muslim religious expression, culminating in the 2025 'I Love Muhammad' crackdown. When Muslims in Kanpur displayed devotional signboards during Eid Milad-un-Nabi (Prophet Muhammad's birthday), police filed FIRs under charges of 'promoting enmity between groups.' The crackdown spread nationwide — by October 2025, APCR documented 4,505 Muslims officially charged and 265 arrested across multiple BJP-governed states. In Bareilly, 75 were arrested and at least four properties bulldozed as collective punishment. The pattern extends beyond the signboards: 90+ Muslims arrested in Assam for social media posts after Operation Sindoor, 2,800 detained after the Pahalgam attack, and opposition politicians held under the National Security Act for speech. The Delhi High Court rejected a challenge to the FIRs, while courts elsewhere quashed individual detentions as unconstitutional.
Muslim Student Severely Beaten at Charlotte High School
On March 7, 2025, a 15-year-old Muslim girl wearing a hijab was severely beaten by a male classmate during math class at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, NC, suffering multiple broken bones in her face and jaw requiring surgery. The victim's family alleged the attack was motivated by anti-Muslim hatred, citing prior bullying including being told to 'go back to her country.' Both the FBI and CMPD concluded there was insufficient evidence for hate crime charges — a finding disputed by CAIR and the family, who noted the victim was never interviewed. The case ignited community tension including a schism between Black and Muslim leaders, heated school board testimony, the principal's suspension and retirement, and a defamation lawsuit filed by the male student's family.
Netherlands PVV Anti-Muslim Political Agenda
Geert Wilders' Party for Freedom (PVV) built its political identity around anti-Islam rhetoric, proposing bans on mosques, the Quran, Islamic schools, and headscarves. After a shock 2023 election victory winning 37 seats, the PVV entered a coalition that declared an 'asylum crisis' and enacted the 'strictest asylum regime ever,' while anti-Muslim incidents surged 57% (272 in 2023). Wilders' anti-Muslim social media post drew a record 12,500+ discrimination complaints. The coalition collapsed after 11 months when PVV demanded even stricter measures, and in the October 2025 snap election the PVV lost 11 seats. In January 2026, seven PVV parliamentarians broke away, reducing it to 19 seats — marking the most significant internal crisis in PVV history.
Canada Mosque Bomb Plot — Newmarket, Ontario
In September 2025, Donald Cameron, a 54-year-old HVAC technician from Newmarket, Ontario, was arrested after allegedly threatening to blow up the Newmarket Islamic Centre and murder his Muslim neighbours — including children — by tampering with gas lines using his professional expertise. Cameron had been a neighbour of the targeted family for 14 years but had been consuming large amounts of Islamophobic content online. The plot was foiled when another neighbour reported the threats to York Regional Police's Hate Crime Prevention Unit. Cameron was charged with two counts of uttering threats. The NCCM, Mayor John Taylor, and the Canadian Muslim Forum condemned the incident and called for urgent action against rising Islamophobia. Despite the threats, the Newmarket Islamic Centre broke ground on a new $6-million facility in December 2025.
Jake Lang Quran Burning Attempt in Dearborn
On November 18, 2025, Jake Lang — a pardoned January 6 Capitol riot defendant and Republican U.S. Senate candidate — led an anti-Islam march in Dearborn, Michigan under the banner 'Americans Against Islamification.' Lang attempted to burn a Quran, slapped it with bacon, used racial slurs against counter-protesters, and told Muslim city council members 'we don't want you in our country.' The Dearborn Muslim community mounted a large counter-protest, and city, state, and religious leaders held a unity press conference condemning the provocation. Lang subsequently filed a $200 million federal lawsuit against the City of Dearborn and Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, which the Arab American News exposed as a calculated provocateur strategy. The SPLC documented the incident as part of a broader trend of far-right anti-Muslim provocations.
Australia Post-Bondi Anti-Muslim Backlash
Anti-Muslim backlash in Australia escalated across two waves: the first following the April 2024 Sydney stabbings (Bondi Junction and Wakeley church), and the second after the December 2025 Bondi Beach shooting. The Islamophobia Register recorded 46 hate incidents in days after the April 2024 attacks, fuelled by misinformation falsely linking the Bondi Junction stabbing to Islam. By November 2024, verified in-person Islamophobic incidents had risen 150% with Muslim women and girls accounting for 75% of targets. The December 2025 IS-inspired Bondi Beach shooting triggered mosque vandalism, cemetery desecrations with pig heads, and online incitement echoing the 2005 Cronulla riots, prompting NSW to ban public assemblies across Sydney for 14 days and pass emergency legislation.
India Bulldozer Demolitions of Muslim Homes
India's 'bulldozer justice' is the systematic use of bulldozers by BJP-ruled state governments to summarily demolish homes, businesses, and mosques belonging to Muslims as extrajudicial collective punishment. Popularized by UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ('Bulldozer Baba'), the practice escalated from 2022 across Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, and Assam. Amnesty International documented 128 targeted demolitions in three months of 2022, with 62 of 63 investigated properties belonging to Muslims. UN experts reported ~738,000 people displaced in 2022-2023. In Nuh, Haryana, 1,200+ structures were razed; in Ahmedabad, 10,000+ structures destroyed in 2025. India's Supreme Court declared the practice unconstitutional in November 2024, but state governments continue in defiance — the court stated continued violations 'shock our conscience.'
Muslim Twins Hijab Attack at Waterbury School
On March 3, 2025, twin 13-year-old Muslim sisters of Egyptian origin were physically assaulted by fellow students in the girls' locker room at Wallace Middle School in Waterbury, Connecticut. The attackers pulled off the twins' hijabs and kicked and punched them, causing injuries requiring hospital treatment including a bloody nose, facial bruises, a swollen eye, and a neck scrape. The assault followed weeks of religious and ethnic bullying including taunts and a throat-slashing gesture. CAIR-CT intervened with a press conference and formal demands to Waterbury Public Schools. On March 21, 2025, a 12-year-old student was charged with Intimidation Based on Bigotry and Bias after investigators classified the attack as a hate crime motivated by religion and ethnicity.
Attempted Drowning of Palestinian-American Children
On May 19, 2024, Elizabeth Wolf, a 42-year-old white woman, attempted to drown a 3-year-old Palestinian-American girl and injured her 6-year-old brother at an apartment complex pool in Euless, Texas, after calling their hijab-wearing mother a 'terrorist.' Wolf was initially arrested for public intoxication and released on $1,000 bond, but charges were escalated to attempted capital murder with a hate crime enhancement after CAIR-Texas demanded investigation. A Tarrant County grand jury indicted her in September 2024, and her bond was raised to $1 million. In October 2025, Wolf pleaded guilty and admitted the attack was motivated by bias against Muslims, receiving a five-year sentence that CAIR criticized as too lenient given the maximum of life in prison.
Thailand Forced Deportation of 40 Uyghurs to China
On February 27, 2025, Thailand forcibly deported 40 Uyghur asylum seekers to China in a secretive pre-dawn operation, after holding them in arbitrary detention for over a decade. The deportation violated the principle of non-refoulement despite resettlement offers from the US, Canada, Australia, and Sweden. The UN, Amnesty International, and the US condemned the action — with the US imposing visa sanctions on Thai officials. A Washington Post investigation revealed officials secretly planned the deportation while publicly denying it. Thailand's own National Human Rights Commission ruled the deportation unlawful. One year later, none of the 40 men have been independently contacted — UN experts say China's silence amounts to enforced disappearance.
Portugal Face Veil Ban
Portugal's parliament approved a face veil ban on October 17, 2025, driven by the far-right Chega party which surged from 1 seat in 2019 to 60 in 2025 (second-largest party). The ban targets burqas and niqabs with fines up to 4,000 euros and prison for coercion, despite Portugal's Muslim community of just 36,000 where virtually no women wear full face coverings.
